COMPLETE GUIDE
Walking games: the apps that turn your steps into something
Short answer: a walking game spends the steps your phone already counts on progress in a game. There are four kinds. GPS games like Pokemon GO need you out on the map. Step-counter games like Walkr bank your daily total. Trail and story games like Fantasy Hike move a plot. Idle RPGs like WalkScape turn steps into work. Pick the kind first, then the app.
Every walking game makes the same offer: the steps you already take turn into something. What that something is varies a lot, and roundups often blur it. This guide sorts the games by how they use your steps, then shows what one ordinary 5,000-step day buys in each, from each developer's own documentation.
A disclosure first. This guide is written by the person who makes Chonky Corgo, one of the games in the tables. Chonky Corgo's rows carry a weakness like every other row, and the last section says plainly what we sell.
What is a walking game?
A walking game is an app that turns real walking into progress in a game. Your phone, your watch or Apple Health counts the steps or the distance, and the game spends that count on something: an egg, a planet, a chapter, an attack. Plain step counters with badges, and apps that pay cash, are a different category.
The label covers very different products. Pokemon GO wants you outside at real places. Walkr wants your daily total. Zombies, Run! wants a session with headphones in. WalkScape wants steps as raw labor for a skill grind. Choosing the kind first saves you from installing the wrong one.
What are the four kinds of walking game?
Sorted by what the game does with your walking, there are four. GPS games put the game on a real map. Step-counter games bank your daily total. Trail and story games move you along a route or a plot. Idle RPGs turn steps into work for a character. Each kind suits a different person and a different week.
GPS games: the map is the game
Pokemon GO, Pikmin Bloom and Monster Hunter Now place things on a real map, so where you walk matters as much as how far. The Pokemon GO and Pikmin Bloom listings both warn that continued GPS use in the background can dramatically reduce battery life. What you find depends on what is near you.
Step-counter games: your daily total is the currency
Walkr, Wokamon and Chonky Corgo read the step count your phone already keeps and turn it into fuel, energy or attacks. Location plays no part. A treadmill, a village lane and an office corridor all count the same, so the phone can stay in your pocket all day.
Trail and story games: distance moves a plot
Fantasy Hike, Thru and MistyWay move a marker along a long route as you walk. Zombies, Run! plays an audio story during a walk or run you start. The pull is finding out what happens next. The catch is the ending, because a finished trail leaves you looking for the next one.
Idle RPGs: steps become work
WalkScape is the clearest case. WalkScape's devblog explains that each step adds work toward an action, so cutting one birch tree takes 30 steps with no gear. Progress lands in skills and items, not on a map. WalkScape's help page says the game is balanced around opening it once every 1,000 to 10,000 steps.
What does a 5,000-step day buy in each game?
It depends on the kind. In version 2.0, 5,000 steps buy 20 attacks in Chonky Corgo. The same walk, about 3.75 km at a 75 cm stride, hatches Pokemon GO's 1 km Daily Adventure Egg. In WalkScape it cuts about 166 birch trees with no gear. Several developers publish no rate at all.
Each cell below comes from the developer's own help pages, devblog or App Store listing, read on 4 October 2026. Where a developer publishes nothing, the cell says so, rather than borrowing a number from a fan wiki. Distances assume a 75 cm stride. Apple Health records your own walking distance if you want to check yours.
| App | Kind | What 5,000 steps buys | What a quiet day costs | Apple Watch app | Real weakness |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Apple Fitness (built in) | Activity rings | No game reward. Steps show only as a total in the Activity app, and the Move ring counts active calories | An unfilled ring. Apple lets you pause rings for up to 90 days without breaking your award streak | Built in | It scores calories, not steps, and the rings are the whole reward |
| Pokemon GO | GPS | About 3.75 km of Egg distance: enough for the 1 km Daily Adventure Egg (Level 15 and up), or a third of a 12 km Strange Egg | Not documented by the developer | No | Needs location, and its listing warns background GPS can dramatically reduce battery life |
| Pikmin Bloom | GPS | Step energy that grows seedlings in your planter pack. Niantic gives no steps per seedling | Not documented by the developer | No | Needs location, carries the same battery warning, and publishes no step rates |
| Monster Hunter Now | GPS | Distance that lets your Palico mark passing monsters to hunt later. No distance per mark is documented | Not documented by the developer | No | Needs location, and every hunt is a 75-second fight on the screen |
| Walkr | Step counter | Energy production is your 7-day average, counting a walking step once and a running step twice. A steady 5,000-step walking day holds that average at 5,000 | Documented: a day with no walking pulls the 7-day average down for a week | No | Ads unless you buy the $1.99 Ads Remover, and the SPARKFUL plan is $7.99 a month |
| Wokamon | Step counter | Energy for your Wokamons, converted when you open the app. The developer's FAQ gives no rate | Not documented by the developer | Listed, with watchOS 2.0 or later | No published rate, so you cannot tell what a walk is worth before you play |
| Fantasy Hike | Trail | About 3.75 km toward Mount Fire, if the free daily distance limit allows. Forge7 does not state the limit | Not documented by the developer | No. It reads Watch distance through Apple Health | One trail that ends, and a free tier with a daily distance cap |
| Zombies, Run! | Story | Nothing documented for steps outside a mission. A mission plays during a walk or run you start, by GPS or Step Counting | Not documented by the developer | Yes | Built around sessions you start, with one free mission a week |
| WalkScape | Idle RPG | About 166 birch trees with no gear, at 30 work each, or up to 263 at that activity's 19-step floor, per a January 2024 devblog | No decay documented, but its help page asks you to open the game every 7 days so steps are not lost | Not on the App Store. Its help page says smartwatches work | Closed beta: most applicants wait a few months unless they pay as supporters |
| Chonky Corgo (ours) | Step counter and story | In version 2.0, 20 attacks on the day's monster at 250 steps each. Any 3,000 steps also earn a full day of story credit | Spend a Rest Day to hold your streak and Form, or take the Form drop. Story, Coins and pets are untouched | Yes: steps, goal, streak, story status and Trail Walks. Fights stay on iPhone | The Main Story is 5 chapters of 18 goal days in version 2.0, so a daily walker finishes it in about 90 goal days, and it has no ratings yet |
One pattern stands out. Most developers do not tell you what a walk is worth before you play. Niantic documents Egg distances but no seedling step counts for Pikmin Bloom, and Wokamon's developer says steps convert to energy without giving a rate. The rates in this table are the ones you can actually check.
What does a quiet day cost in each game?
Almost no developer says. On 4 October 2026 Walkr was the only game in the table to document it: energy production is a 7-day average, so a day without walking lowers it for a week. Pikmin Bloom, Wokamon and Fantasy Hike publish nothing official. WalkScape only asks you to open the game at least weekly.
Chonky Corgo's answer is a choice rather than a reset. A missed goal day offers a Rest Day, which holds your streak and Chonky's Form, or you take the Form drop. Story chapters, Coins and pets never move. The full mechanics are in what happens in Chonky Corgo when you miss a day, and the wider case is in walking apps that do not punish you for a quiet day.
Which walking games work without GPS?
The step-counter, trail and idle games in the table work without GPS. Walkr, Wokamon, Fantasy Hike, WalkScape and Chonky Corgo read a step or distance count instead of your position, and Zombies, Run! has a Step Counting mode for indoors. Pokemon GO, Pikmin Bloom and Monster Hunter Now need location to play at all.
Not needing GPS is not the same as never asking for it, and battery, safety and an empty local map are three different reasons to leave GPS behind. Each reason has a different best answer, sorted out in walking apps like Pokemon GO that do not need GPS.
Which walking games have an Apple Watch app?
Few of them. On 4 October 2026 the App Store listed a watch app for Zombies, Run!, Wokamon and Chonky Corgo, and none for Pokemon GO, Pikmin Bloom, Monster Hunter Now, Walkr or Fantasy Hike. Fantasy Hike reads Apple Watch distance through Apple Health instead. Wokamon's watch app lists watchOS 2.0 as its minimum.
We checked each one two ways, through Apple's lookup service and through the listing page, and the two agreed every time. We have not tested Wokamon's watch app on a current watch, so read that row as listed, not as working.
Do walking games actually make people walk more?
For a while, yes. A 2016 study of 32,000 Microsoft Band wearers found that engaged Pokemon GO players added 1,473 steps a day over 30 days. A 2020 meta-analysis of 17 studies put the gain at 1,446 steps a day, and named keeping players after the novelty wears off as the open problem.
The studies measured weeks, not years. So no walking game can claim to keep you walking for good, and that includes Chonky Corgo. The honest test is whether a game still pulls you out the door in its second month. If the walk itself is the problem, how to make walking more fun looks at that first.
How popular is each walking game?
By App Store ratings, Pokemon GO dwarfs everything else here, with 654,530 US ratings on 4 October 2026. Pikmin Bloom and Monster Hunter Now follow with tens of thousands each. Chonky Corgo had none. Ratings measure reach rather than fit, so a small game can still be the right one.
| App | US ratings | Average | Latest update |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pokemon GO | 654,530 | 4.0 | 2 Oct 2026 |
| Pikmin Bloom | 69,158 | 4.8 | 28 Sep 2026 |
| Monster Hunter Now | 49,020 | 4.7 | 2 Oct 2026 |
| Zombies, Run! | 24,098 | 4.8 | 29 Sep 2026 |
| Fantasy Hike | 14,958 | 4.8 | 30 Sep 2026 |
| Walkr | 8,045 | 4.5 | 29 Sep 2026 |
| Wokamon | 1,537 | 4.5 | 3 Mar 2026 |
| Chonky Corgo (ours) | 0 | None yet | 30 Sep 2026 |
Which walking game should you try first?
Start from your reason, not from a ranking. If the streets near you are busy and you like exploring, try Pokemon GO or Pikmin Bloom. If you want the phone to stay in your pocket, try a step-counter game. If you want a finish line, try a trail game. If you love a long grind, look at WalkScape.
- Phone battery is the worry: a step-counter game such as Walkr or Chonky Corgo, which reads a count your iPhone already keeps.
- You want a story in your ears: Zombies, Run!, which plays during a walk you start.
- You want a long road with an end: Fantasy Hike, or a free trail app such as Thru.
- You want a daily fight and a plot from scattered steps: Chonky Corgo, which is ours, so weigh that.
If cost decides it, Thru and Lord of the Steps are free trail apps with no purchases listed, and they turn up in a free alternative to The Conqueror Challenges, which prices a paid virtual route per mile.
What else is in this guide?
Each supporting page takes one question from this guide further. One prices The Conqueror per mile and names a free stand-in for each part. Others compare games that do not need GPS, cover what to play after Fantasy Hike ends, and ask how to enjoy walking at all. New pages appear here as they publish.

A free alternative to The Conqueror Challenges, and what you give up
Short answer: there is no free version of The Conqueror, but you can rebuild most of it for $0. Thru and Lord of the Steps give you a long virtual route, and Garfunkel Walk adds Street View on a route you draw. No free app replaces the medal in the post. The single Conqueror challenges we priced cost $39.98 to $56.98 delivered on 4 October 2026.

Walking apps like Pokemon GO that do not need GPS
Short answer: a step-counter game. Walkr, Wokamon, Fantasy Hike, Zombies, Run! in Step Counting mode and Chonky Corgo (ours) all play from your step or distance count, with no location needed. Pikmin Bloom and Monster Hunter Now feel closest to Pokemon GO, but both need location too. Choose by your reason for leaving: battery, safety, or nothing nearby.
ARTICLE
Fantasy Hike alternatives: walking apps worth trying next
Short answer: pick by what you liked about Fantasy Hike. For another long trail, try MistyWay or Thru. For Middle-earth itself, The Conqueror sells official Lord of the Rings challenges with real medals. For a story that keeps coming, try Zombies, Run! and its 500-plus missions. For a daily loop with no finish line, try Walkr or Pikmin Bloom. If you are mid-quest and happy, stay.

How to make walking more fun when you already know you should walk
Short answer: give the walk a second job, and pick one whose momentum does not depend on you. Most advice here (a podcast, a new route) only works for people who already enjoy walking and need it topped up. If you do not enjoy it, you need something that pulls you out the door rather than something that decorates the walk once you are already on it.
Who wrote this, and what do they sell?
Russell Ong, who builds Chonky Corgo, wrote this guide. Chonky Corgo is free to download, and it earns money from Chonky Club at $2.99 a month or $19.99 a year, Gem packs, playsets, No Banner Ads at $5.99, and a banner ad shown by default to signed-in adults. Every row was checked the same way.
Chonky Corgo's weaknesses are in its rows. Chonky Corgo is new and has no ratings. The Main Story runs about 90 goal days in version 2.0. The fights stay on the iPhone even with the watch app. If finding real places is what you want from a walk, a GPS game will suit you better.
What else do people ask?
Three questions that come up when people first look at walking games, usually right after a step counter stopped working for them. The answers lean on the developers' own pages, read on 4 October 2026, because app details like these change with every update.
- What is the best walking game?
- There is no single best one, because the four kinds do different jobs. Pokemon GO is the biggest by ratings but needs location. A step-counter game suits a routine with the phone in a pocket, and a trail game suits someone who wants a finish line.
- Do walking games work on a treadmill?
- Step-counter and idle games do, because they read a step count rather than your position. WalkScape's help page names treadmills, and so does Wokamon's listing. GPS games such as Pokemon GO are built around moving across a real map.
- Can I play WalkScape on iPhone?
- Only by invitation for now. WalkScape's help page describes a closed beta on TestFlight for iPhone and Google Play for Android. Most applicants wait a few months, and supporters on Patreon or Buy Me a Coffee get an invite straight away.
