What is a walking RPG? The genre, defined and counted
Short answer: a walking RPG is a game where the steps your phone counts become a resource you spend on a character, such as levels, gear or skills, which then win fights or do skilled work. On 4 October 2026, 16 games on the US App Store passed that test in our census, out of 70 walking games found. Nine of the 16 came out in 2026.
Search for a walking RPG on the App Store and you get store pages, a few roundups and a lot of noise, from zombie shooters to endless runners. We could not find a page that defines the genre or counts it. This page does both, with the rule written down so anyone can repeat the count.
A disclosure that matters more than usual: "Walking RPG" is in the App Store title of Chonky Corgo, the game we make. So this page defines a genre we sell into. The rule below comes from the mechanism, and Chonky Corgo was not included in the count.
What is a walking RPG?
A walking RPG is a role-playing game whose main resource is your real walking. The steps or distance that your phone, watch or Apple Health counts are spent on a character's progress, such as levels, stats, gear or skills. That progress then wins fights or does skilled work. In this page's definition, location plays no part.
That last condition separates walking RPGs from GPS RPGs such as Orna, which puts dungeons and bosses at real landmarks. The two suit different lives: a GPS RPG wants interesting places nearby, and a walking RPG works the same on a treadmill as on a city street.
How do you tell a walking RPG from other walking games?
Ask what the steps buy. If they buy a character's power, and that power then fights or works, it is a walking RPG. If they move a marker along a trail, grow a pet or fill a collection, it is a walking game of another kind. If the map decides what you find, it is a GPS game.
Inside the genre, two models cover most games. Steps can be ammunition, spent straight on attacks. Or steps can be labor, spent as work on an action that a higher skill makes cheaper. Chonky Corgo and WalkScape are clean examples of each.
Steps as ammunition: Chonky Corgo
In version 2.0, every 250 steps from Apple Health charge one attack on the day's monster, and up to 249 leftover steps carry over. Each goal day also earns Trail XP. An attack deals 44 damage plus 1 for each Trail level, before Paw Power matchups and critical hits, so a long walking habit makes every attack stronger.
Steps as labor: WalkScape
WalkScape's devblog explains that each step produces work toward the current action. Cutting a birch tree takes 30 work, so 30 steps with no gear. A higher woodcutting level adds 1.25% work efficiency per level above the requirement, up to 25%, and gear adds more until a 19-step floor. Skill makes steps go further.
How many walking RPGs are on the App Store?
We found 16 on 4 October 2026. We searched the US App Store through Apple's public search service for four phrases, kept the 70 games whose descriptions say real steps or distance drive play, then kept the 16 whose steps buy a character's power for fights or skilled work. Here is the full rule.
- Pull the candidatesSearch Apple's public search service, US store, for "walking rpg", "step rpg", "walking game" and "pedometer game", up to 200 results each. On 4 October 2026 that gave 559 unique apps.
- Keep the walking gamesKeep an app only if its description says steps or distance, counted by the phone, a watch or Apple Health, move a game forward: a character, pet, route, world, story or fight. Drop plain step counters whose extras are badges, streaks, leaderboards or challenges, apps that pay cash, gift cards or crypto, and games where walking happens only on the screen. 70 games stayed.
- Set location games asideDrop games where the map decides play, such as Pokemon GO, Orna and Monster Hunter Now. Location games count as walking games in a wider sense, but they are a different genre.
- Apply the RPG testKeep a game only if its description says steps or distance buy a character's progress, meaning levels, stats, gear or skills, and that progress is used in fights or skilled work. 16 games passed.
The sorting was done by hand from each description, so a reader could fairly move a borderline game. Store search results also change daily. Read the counts as a dated snapshot, and rerun the four searches if you want today's numbers.

Sixteen games, listed below by release date, with each one's ratings and latest update from Apple's lookup service on 4 October 2026. The middle column says what your steps buy, in each listing's own terms. The last column is the catch we would want to know first. Chonky Corgo is added at the end, outside the count.

What do the walking RPGs have in common?
Youth and small audiences. Nine of the 16 came out in 2026, and only one, Walking RPG: Hero health game from 2018, came out before 2023. Twelve had fewer than 100 US ratings, and four had none. Fourteen were updated in the six months before 4 October 2026. Only one lists an Apple Watch app.
The wider pool is just as new. Of the 70 walking games that passed the first test, 32 were first released in 2026. A lot of small teams arrived at the same idea at once, which is good news for choice and a reason to check a game's latest update date before you commit months of steps to it.
Which games call themselves RPGs but are not, by this rule?
Nine walking games in the census use the RPG label or list the Roleplaying category but failed the mechanism test. TeraStriders calls itself a walking RPG, yet its listing describes hatching and collecting creatures. StepSaga RPG ties story outcomes to a team's activity, with no character to level. MistyWay is a trail with quests.
None of that makes them worse games. It means the label on the store page is a poor guide to what your steps will actually do. Read the description for the verb attached to your steps: hatch, grow, travel, or fight and train.
Is Chonky Corgo a walking RPG?
By this page's rule, yes, and we have a stake in saying so, because the phrase is in Chonky Corgo's App Store title. In version 2.0, steps charge attacks and goal days earn Trail XP that raises attack damage. None of the four searches returned it on 4 October 2026, so it is not in the count of 16.
The tradeoff against the bigger games is plain. Chonky Corgo is new and has no ratings, while Walking RPG: Hero health game has been on the store since 2018. Chonky Corgo's Main Story runs about 90 goal days in version 2.0, and Chonky Corgo has no gathering or crafting skills, so a skill-grind fan may prefer HarvestStep or WalkScape.
How is a walking RPG different from a GPS RPG?
A GPS RPG puts the game at real places. Orna hides dungeons at landmarks, and Monster Hunter Now shows monsters by the habitat around you, so you play where you are. A walking RPG reads a count of steps instead. A treadmill works as well as a city street, and the phone can stay in a pocket.
Which is better depends on where you live and how you walk. The reasons people give for leaving GPS games behind, battery, safety and empty maps, are sorted out in walking apps like Pokemon GO that do not need GPS. Every kind of walking game is compared in the walking games guide.
What else do people ask?
Three questions that come up once people know what a walking RPG is and start looking for one to play. The answers come from the census on this page and from each developer's own pages, read on 4 October 2026, so the counts will drift as new games appear.
- Is WalkScape a walking RPG?
- WalkScape fits the definition, because its steps become work for skills and items. WalkScape is not in the count of 16 because it is not on the App Store. WalkScape's help page describes a closed beta on TestFlight for iPhone, with supporters getting instant access.
- What is the oldest walking RPG on the App Store?
- In this census, Walking RPG: Hero health game by Shikudo, first released in February 2018, is the oldest. Every other game that passed the walking RPG test came out in 2023 or later. Older games may exist that the four searches did not return.
- Are walking RPGs free?
- All 16 walking RPGs in the census were free to download on 4 October 2026. Most sell subscriptions, passes or gem packs. PaceQuest and Mettle listed no in-app purchases at all on that date.
