Short answer: around 7,000 steps a day, and if you are starting from a lower number, your current 30-day average plus about 1,000. A 2025 review of 57 studies found the health benefits of walking flatten out between 5,000 and 7,000 steps. The 10,000 figure was a pedometer's product name in 1965.
