Step goals: what is a good one, and why 10,000 was never the answer
Short answer: around 7,000 steps a day, and if you are starting from a lower number, your current 30-day average plus about 1,000. A 2025 review of 57 studies found the health benefits of walking flatten out between 5,000 and 7,000 steps. The 10,000 figure was a pedometer's product name in 1965.
Almost every step goal in the world is set to 10,000, and almost nobody who set it can say why. That is because the number did not come from research. It came from a Japanese pedometer sold in 1965 called the manpo-kei, which translates as ten-thousand-step meter.

What is a good step goal?
Around 7,000 steps a day for most adults. That is where the 2025 Lancet Public Health meta-analysis found the benefit curve flattening for death from any cause, cardiovascular disease, dementia and falls. If your current average is well under that, a better starting goal is your own 30-day average plus about 1,000, moved up when it gets easy.
Why is 10,000 steps a myth?
Because 10,000 was a product name, not a finding. Yamasa Tokei, a Japanese clock company, launched a consumer pedometer in 1965 called the manpo-kei. Man means 10,000, po means steps, kei means meter. The device rode the national interest in fitness that followed the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, and the number on the box became the goal.
Researchers have said so in print for years. The 2019 JAMA Internal Medicine study of step volume and mortality opens by noting that the 10,000 figure has limited scientific basis. That sentence is in a peer-reviewed paper, not a blog post.

What did the 2025 Lancet meta-analysis find?
The most complete answer available is a 2025 systematic review and dose-response meta-analysis in The Lancet Public Health, led by Melody Ding at the University of Sydney. The review covered 57 studies from 35 cohorts, meta-analysed 31 of them, and looked at nine health outcomes rather than mortality alone.
Compared with a fairly sedentary 2,000 steps a day, here is what 7,000 steps a day was associated with.

Where does the benefit curve actually bend?
Between 5,000 and 7,000 steps a day. The Ding review reports an inverse non-linear association for death from any cause, cardiovascular disease incidence, dementia and falls, with the inflection points landing in that range. Past it the line keeps improving, just slowly. Most of the payoff is banked early.
This is not one study having an opinion. The 2022 meta-analysis of 15 international cohorts led by Amanda Paluch found the same flattening, with the plateau at about 6,000 to 8,000 steps for adults over 60 and 8,000 to 10,000 for adults under 60. The 2019 JAMA Internal Medicine study of 16,741 older women found risk falling until roughly 7,500 steps a day and then levelling off.
Three research groups, three datasets, three answers in the same neighbourhood. That is about as good as this kind of evidence gets.
What does the research not say?
It does not say that walking more caused the lower risk. These are observational cohorts, not randomised trials. Nobody assigned people a step count and waited twenty years. People who walk 7,000 steps a day differ from people who walk 2,000 in ways that are hard to adjust for.
Some of that difference is health causing steps rather than steps causing health. The Ding review says this plainly and lists residual confounding as a limitation. It also rates the certainty of evidence as moderate for most outcomes, low for a few, and very low for falls. Several rows in the table above rest on two or three studies. The direction of the finding is solid. The precision of any single percentage is not.
Does walking faster matter more than walking further?
Less than you would expect. The 2019 study measured stepping intensity several ways, including peak one-minute cadence and peak thirty-minute cadence. Higher intensity looked better at first, but once the researchers adjusted for total steps per day, almost all of those associations shrank and stopped being statistically significant.
The number of steps is doing most of the work. A slow 7,000 counts. Treating a gentle walk as not real exercise is a reliable way to talk yourself out of taking it.
Does a good step goal change with age?
The evidence supports exactly one age split. Paluch et al. found the mortality plateau at about 6,000 to 8,000 steps for adults over 60, and 8,000 to 10,000 for adults under 60. That is two brackets rather than five, and the Ding review lists its own lack of age-specific analysis as a limitation.

How do you set a step goal you will actually keep?
Start from where you are rather than from where you think you should be. The single most common step-goal mistake is picking the number you want to be hitting instead of the one you are hitting now, which turns every evening into a small report of failure. Four steps, in order.
- Find your real baseline firstOpen Apple Health, go to Steps, and look at your daily average over the last month. Not your best day. The average. Most people land between 3,000 and 6,000, and the number is usually lower than they expect.
- Add about 1,000 to itThat is roughly a ten minute walk. A goal you beat four days out of seven is a goal you keep. A goal you miss every day is a daily notification telling you that you failed.
- Move the target only when it gets easyWhen you are clearing it most days without planning around it, add another 1,000. Repeat until you are somewhere near 7,000, then stop moving it.
- Stop at 7,000 unless you want moreAbove 7,000 the curve is still going the right way, it is just going there slowly. If you enjoy walking 12,000 steps, walk 12,000 steps. If you are doing it because a ring told you to, you have passed the point of diminishing returns.
What happens when you reach the number?
For most step trackers, nothing. A ring closes, a counter resets at midnight, and the same number is waiting tomorrow. That is the part of the step-goal problem the research cannot help with, and it is the reason a lot of people stop before the health benefit has had time to accrue.

- Is 10,000 steps a day bad advice?
- No, just unearned. The figure came from the name of a 1965 Japanese pedometer rather than a study. If you hit 10,000 comfortably, keep going. The research shows benefit continuing above 7,000, it just rises more slowly.
- Does walking 7,000 steps have to be in one go?
- No. Every study cited here measured total daily steps from a device worn all day, not continuous walks. Steps accumulated in short bursts across the day counted exactly the same as a single long walk, so a ten minute walk is never wasted.
- Do I need a smartwatch to count steps?
- No. An iPhone in your pocket counts steps through its built-in motion sensors and writes them to Apple Health. A watch is more accurate because it catches arm movement while you are pushing a trolley or carrying a bag, but a phone is enough to track a trend.
