How many steps a minute is brisk walking? The thresholds by age

SHORT ANSWER

Short answer: about 100 steps a minute, at every adult age tested so far. Three lab studies of adults aged 21 to 85 found that 100 steps a minute marks moderate intensity, which is what health guidelines mean by brisk walking. Vigorous effort starts at about 130 up to age 60. Over 60, the researchers set no vigorous number.

Many pages that answer this cite one study, the one on 21 to 40 year olds, and then say the number for older adults is unclear. For moderate effort, it is not. The same research team ran the same treadmill test on three age groups, and the third paper came out in 2021.

Here are all three, read together, with what each one can and cannot tell you.

How many steps a minute is brisk walking?

About 100. The CDC counts walking briskly, at 2.5 miles per hour or faster, as moderate-intensity activity, and it recommends 150 minutes of that a week. The CADENCE-Adults studies found that 100 steps a minute is where walking reaches moderate intensity, defined as 3 METs, in adults aged 21 to 85.

A MET is a unit of effort. One MET is roughly what your body uses sitting at rest, so 3 METs is about three times that.

What are the cadence thresholds by age?

Adults up to 60 share the same two numbers: 100 steps a minute for moderate effort and 130 for vigorous. Adults aged 61 to 85 got a finer ladder instead. For them, 100, 110 and 120 steps a minute matched 3, 4 and 5 METs, and there was no vigorous threshold at all.

61 to 8598100110120Not set, only 6 of 98 reached it

These are rounded numbers, which the authors call heuristic. For 21 to 40 year olds, one statistical method gave 102 and 129 steps a minute, and another gave 96 and 120. The team settled on 100 and 130. In the 41 to 60 paper's words, the values were picked for their usefulness in public health messaging.

Why is there no vigorous number for people over 60?

Because almost nobody in the older group got there. In the 61 to 85 study, only 6 of 98 people, about 6%, reached 6 METs on the treadmill before their test ended. The authors said their data could not support a vigorous threshold, so they did not publish one. This page does not invent one either.

Each test ended when a person chose to run, reached 75% of their predicted maximum heart rate, or rated the effort above 13 on a 6 to 20 scale. Those rules protect people. They also cap how hard anyone in the study could go.

How sure can you be of 100 steps a minute?

Fairly sure, for healthy adults on a treadmill. In the 21 to 40 study, people walking at 100 steps a minute or more were at moderate intensity 91.4% of the time. The weaker spot is everyday walking. The 41 to 60 paper says its findings still need confirming in free-living settings, outside the lab.

So treat 100 as a good first check, and add a second one from the CDC, the talk test. At moderate effort you can talk but not sing.

How do you measure your own steps per minute?

Count your steps for 30 seconds of normal walking and double the number. If you reach 50 or more in 30 seconds, you are at about 100 steps a minute, a little under two steps every second. The researchers did much the same thing: an observer counted every step by hand.

Do it once at your usual pace and once when you feel you are hurrying. The gap between the two shows how much brisker your brisk walk really is.

Does walking faster matter more than walking more steps?

Not clearly, and the studies disagree. A 2019 study of 16,741 older women found that once total steps were counted, faster stepping was no longer clearly tied to lower mortality. A 2023 meta-analysis of 111,309 people found that moving from a low cadence to a higher one was linked to lower mortality on its own.

So treat cadence as a way to judge effort, and total steps as the main number. That is how the step-goals guide treats them too.

How long is a brisk walk in steps?

At 100 steps a minute, 10 minutes is about 1,000 steps and 30 minutes is about 3,000. The CDC's 150 minutes a week works out to roughly 15,000 brisk steps, or about 3,000 a day on five days. Two of those numbers are also walk quest sizes in Chonky Corgo.

Chonky is our game. In version 2.0 its walk quests are Find Lunch at 1,000 steps, Deliver Mail at 3,000 and Reach Camp at 6,000. At 100 steps a minute, that is about 10, 30 and 60 minutes. Each quest closes two hours after you start it, so even Reach Camp needs only 50 steps a minute on average.

There is a limit worth knowing. Chonky reads step totals from Apple Health, not your pace, and in version 2.0 every 250 steps charge one attack whether you stroll or stride. The game will not tell you when you have reached brisk. For that, use the 30-second count or the talk test.

What else do people ask?

Four questions that come up after the main one. Every number below comes from one of the three CADENCE-Adults papers or from the CDC. Where a paper did not report something, the answer says so instead of filling the gap with a guess.

Is 100 steps per minute brisk walking?
Yes, by the research definition. In the CADENCE-Adults studies, 100 steps a minute marked moderate intensity, 3 METs, for adults aged 21 to 85. The CDC lists brisk walking as moderate-intensity activity.
How many steps a minute is vigorous walking?
About 130 steps a minute for adults aged 21 to 60, from the CADENCE-Adults studies. For adults aged 61 to 85 the researchers set no vigorous threshold, because only 6 of 98 reached that intensity.
What cadence counts as brisk for a 70 year old?
In the 61 to 85 study, 100 steps a minute matched moderate intensity, 110 matched 4 METs and 120 matched 5 METs. Those volunteers averaged 72.6 years old and were healthy enough to walk on a treadmill.
How many steps is 30 minutes of brisk walking?
About 3,000, if you walk at 100 steps a minute, the moderate-intensity threshold from the CADENCE-Adults studies. Walk faster and the same 30 minutes holds more steps.
