Step goals by age: what the research supports
Short answer: the research supports two brackets, not five. A meta-analysis of 15 international cohorts found the mortality benefit plateaued at about 6,000 to 8,000 steps a day for adults over 60, and 8,000 to 10,000 for adults under 60. Any chart giving you a number for your thirties, forties and fifties separately made those brackets up.
Search for step goals by age and you will find neat tables: 12,000 in your twenties, 11,000 in your thirties, tapering to 7,000 at sixty-five. They look authoritative. Almost none of them cite a study, because the study that would support them does not exist.
Here is what the evidence actually divides on, and why the honest version of this page is shorter than the invented one.
How many steps a day by age?
Two brackets. The 2022 meta-analysis of 15 international cohorts led by Amanda Paluch found that the risk of death from any cause stopped falling at about 6,000 to 8,000 steps a day for adults aged 60 and over, and at about 8,000 to 10,000 for adults under 60.
That is the whole age-specific finding, and it comes from 15 cohorts rather than from one small study.

Notice what the table does not contain. There is no row for your thirties, no row for your forties, and no separate number for men and women. The study did not report those, so this page does not either.
Why do most age charts have five brackets?
Because five brackets make a better-looking table than two. A chart with a distinct number for every decade reads as precise and personalised, and it is easy to produce if you are willing to interpolate between two real data points and present the result as a finding.
The tell is the citation. An age-bracket chart that cites nothing, or that cites another blog with a similar chart, is a chain of copies. An honest one names the cohort study and reproduces its actual groupings, which means it has two rows.
Does the 7,000 figure change with age?
The 2025 Lancet Public Health review that produced the 7,000 figure does not break its results down by age at all, and it lists that as one of its own limitations. The review explicitly names a lack of age-specific analysis among the things that should temper how its findings are read.
So 7,000 is a general-population target drawn from 57 studies, and 6,000 to 8,000 versus 8,000 to 10,000 is the age split drawn from 15 cohorts. The two are compatible: 7,000 sits inside the older-adult range and just below the younger-adult one. They are not two competing recommendations.
What about older adults specifically?
The strongest single dataset on older adults is the 2019 JAMA Internal Medicine study of 16,741 women in the Women's Health Study, mean age 72. Their mean step count was 5,499 a day. Risk of death fell steadily with higher step counts up to roughly 7,500 a day and then levelled off.
That study also found something useful for anyone worried they are walking too slowly. Higher stepping intensity looked better at first, but once the researchers adjusted for total steps per day, almost all of those intensity associations shrank and stopped being statistically significant. Total steps is doing the work, not pace.
What about children and teenagers?
None of the three studies on this page included them. All three are cohorts of adults, and the dose-response curves here should not be applied to a child or a teenager. Guidance for under-18s comes from a different literature built around minutes of moderate-to-vigorous activity rather than step counts, and this page has not read it.
What should you actually do with your age?
Less than you would think. Your age moves the plateau by roughly 2,000 steps between the two brackets the evidence supports. Your current baseline moves it by a lot more, because someone averaging 3,000 steps and someone averaging 9,000 are in completely different situations regardless of birth year.
- Start from your average, not your ageOpen Apple Health, go to Steps, and read your daily average over the last month. That number is a better input to your goal than the decade you were born in.
- Use the bracket as a ceiling, not a targetIf you are over 60, there is no evidence you need to push past 8,000 for mortality benefit. If you are under 60, the same applies above 10,000. Knowing where to stop is the useful half of this research.
- Ignore any chart that gets more precise than thisA step goal quoted to the nearest hundred for your exact age is a number someone made up. There is no dataset behind that level of precision.
What is the honest summary?
Age changes the answer a little, and the evidence for how much is thinner than the internet suggests. Two brackets, roughly 2,000 steps apart, from one meta-analysis of 15 cohorts. Everything more detailed than that is decoration, and treating it as guidance means acting on a number nobody measured.

- The same meta-analysis found the plateau at about 8,000 to 10,000 steps a day for adults under 60. The curve is steepest well before that, so most of the benefit arrives earlier than the plateau.
- Why does the research only have two age brackets?
- Because that is how the Paluch meta-analysis grouped its 15 cohorts: 60 and over, and under 60. No large study has published a decade-by-decade step threshold, so any chart showing one has interpolated between the real numbers.
- Do step goals apply to children?
- The studies cited here are all adult cohorts and should not be applied to under-18s. Physical activity guidance for children is generally built around minutes of moderate-to-vigorous activity rather than daily step counts.
