iPhone Duo on your nightstand: tent mode and the bedside screen
Short answer: stand iPhone Duo on its edges, a pose Apple calls Standing, and it goes into StandBy on the outer or inner screen, even off the charger. It can show a clock, photos, your calendar, the weather or widgets. Turn on Night Mode for a red tint in the dark. Apps appear there as widgets and Live Activities, or run on the outer screen outside StandBy.
Most phones need a stand to work as a bedside clock. iPhone Duo is its own stand: open it partway, set it on its edges like a little tent, and the outer screen faces you. Apple built StandBy around that pose. This guide covers what the system does there, the settings worth changing before bed, and what apps can show on a standing phone.
Everything here comes from Apple's iPhone Duo page, its 9 September 2026 announcement, its iPhone User Guide and its developer talks, all read on 9 October 2026. Nobody could buy an iPhone Duo then, so we had not slept next to one when we wrote this, and we say where Apple has not filled in the details. A disclosure: we make Chonky Corgo, a walking game. It appears once below, as an example of an app on the outer screen.
What is tent mode on iPhone Duo?
Tent mode is iPhone Duo standing on its own edges, part open, with the hinge at the top. Apple's product page calls the pose Standing. Apple's design guidelines describe the phone standing on its edges, and an Apple developer talk says people may want to set the phone down like a tent. Apple pairs the pose with StandBy.
Apple's iPhone Duo page gives the pose two jobs: StandBy, for a bedside clock, photos and widgets, and watching movies and shows at an adjustable angle on the outer screen. That second job matters at night too, because a standing phone can play a show without a stand or a pillow to prop it on. It is different from Seated, Apple's laptop-style pose, where the phone sits half folded with the inner screen facing you. Our poses guide compares all seven.
How do you turn iPhone Duo into a bedside clock?
Check that StandBy is on, then stand the phone up on your nightstand. Apple says iPhone Duo enters StandBy when you set it down, on the outer or inner screen, even when it is not charging. From there it takes about a minute of swiping and two settings to make it bedside-ready.
- Turn StandBy onOpen Settings, tap StandBy, and make sure StandBy is on. This is the same switch Apple's iPhone User Guide describes for every iPhone.
- Stand the phone upOpen it partway and set it on its edges. Apple says iPhone Duo enters StandBy when you set it down, on either screen, with or without a charger.
- Pick a viewSwipe left or right to move between widgets, photos and clocks. Swipe up or down to scroll through the options inside each one.
- Pick a faceClock and Modular are joined on iPhone Duo by new Calendar and Weather faces. The Photos face can show Shared Albums, and every face has new colors, fonts and complications.
- Turn on Night ModeMake sure Night Mode is on for StandBy. Apple's guide says the screen then adapts to low light at night and shows everything with a red tint, so it is not intrusive while you sleep.
- Choose when the screen sleepsGo to Settings, then StandBy, then Display. Automatically turns it off when you are not using the phone and the room is dark. After 20 Seconds does what it says. Never keeps it on as long as StandBy is on.
What does StandBy show on iPhone Duo?
StandBy on iPhone Duo can be a clock, a photo frame, a hub for widgets or a display for your calendar and the weather. Apple's announcement calls it a major upgrade: two new faces, Calendar and Weather, join the existing Clock and Modular faces, and the Photos face now shows Shared Albums.
| Face or view | New on iPhone Duo? | What Apple says it shows |
|---|---|---|
| Clock | No, it was already in StandBy | The time, as a bedside clock |
| Modular | No, it was already in StandBy | Apple names it but does not describe it |
| Calendar | Yes | Your calendar |
| Weather | Yes | The weather |
| Photos | Updated | Your photos, now including Shared Albums |
| Widgets | No | A full-screen hub for widgets from your apps |
Apple says every face now has more choices for colors, fonts and complications. On the hardware side, Apple lists an Always-On display on both screens, a minimum brightness of 1 nit, and a peak of 3,000 nits outdoors. Apple's general StandBy guide adds that, on a model with an Always-On display, StandBy stays on to show useful information.
Does StandBy on iPhone Duo need a charger?
No. On other iPhones, Apple's guide says StandBy starts when the phone is charging and lying on its side. On iPhone Duo, Apple says StandBy works just about anywhere, even when you are not charging. That is handy on a desk or a kitchen counter, but a nightstand is where we would still plug it in.
Here is the tradeoff. Apple publishes battery figures for video, up to 44 hours on the outer screen and up to 31 hours on the inner one, and no figure for StandBy on battery. So we cannot tell you how much a night of StandBy costs. Apple's general guide also says that with MagSafe, StandBy remembers your preferred view at each place you charge, such as an alarm clock at your bedside. iPhone Duo supports MagSafe and Qi2 chargers, and Apple says wireless charging reaches up to 50 percent in around 30 minutes.
What can apps show on a standing iPhone Duo?
Apps reach a standing iPhone Duo in two ways. Inside StandBy, Apple's guide lists widgets and Live Activities, both shown full screen, so a timer, a delivery or a score can sit by your bed. Outside StandBy, any app can run on the outer screen, the way Apple shows a movie playing on a standing phone.
Turning the phone sideways is where apps differ. Apple's developer talk says the outer screen handles orientation like any other iPhone, so it follows each app's own settings, and it asks developers to support landscape because people may set the phone down like a tent. An app that only works upright may not turn to match. On the inner screen, Apple says the system ignores an app's orientation settings and scales the app to fit instead.

What has Apple not said about tent mode yet?
Apple has said what StandBy does on iPhone Duo, but not every detail of how. On 9 October 2026, Apple's iPhone User Guide had no iPhone Duo pages, and its StandBy page still told readers to charge the phone and lay it on its side. These four questions were still open:
- Which screen wins. Apple says StandBy can run on the outer or the inner screen, but not how the phone decides between them.
- Battery use off the charger. There is no published figure for a night of StandBy on battery.
- Night Mode on each screen. Apple's guide describes the red tint for StandBy in general, with nothing specific to either iPhone Duo screen.
- Testing before launch. Apple's developer talk says the iPhone Duo simulator in Xcode can open, close, rotate or fold the phone. When we used that simulator, it had no tent pose and no StandBy, so app makers could not try either before the phone shipped.
Is iPhone Duo a good bedside clock?
On paper, it suits the job, for three reasons Apple documents. It stands up without a dock, both screens are Always-On, and Night Mode turns StandBy red in the dark. The open questions are battery use off the charger and which screen StandBy picks, and only real nights will answer them.
If you are setting the phone up for the first time, StandBy is item 8 in our list of 12 things to try on your first day with iPhone Duo, which also covers the hands-free FaceTime calls Apple pairs with the same standing pose.
What else do people ask?
Three questions people ask about using iPhone Duo by the bed. The answers come from Apple's iPhone Duo page, its September 2026 announcement and its iPhone User Guide, read on 9 October 2026. Apple can change StandBy in a software update, so check the date at the top of this page first.
- Does iPhone Duo have a nightstand mode?
- Yes. It is StandBy, which Apple pairs with the Standing pose. Stand the phone on its edges and Apple says it enters StandBy on the outer or inner screen, as a clock, photo frame, calendar, weather display or page of widgets.
- Does StandBy drain the iPhone Duo battery overnight?
- Apple has not published a figure. iPhone Duo can run StandBy off the charger, but Apple's battery numbers cover video playback only, so the safest plan for a full night is to keep the phone on a charger.
- Can any app run in StandBy on iPhone Duo?
- Not as a full app. Apple's guide says apps appear in StandBy as widgets and Live Activities. Outside StandBy, you can still use any app on the outer screen of a standing iPhone Duo, such as a video app.
